150th Anniversary Logo of the GFRSThis year 2015 will be the 150th Anniversary of the formation of a Fire Service in Gibraltar. It was on the 20 of November of 1865 that an Order in Council established the Sanitary Commissioners of Gibraltar(the fore-runners of the City Council) whose responsibility was to ensure there were adequate resources to prevent and fight fires in Gibraltar.

The following is an extract from Section 27 of the Order in Council “…for the extinction and prevention of fire, or for the governance of traffic in, upon, and throughout the same, and subject also, as to all such wells and pumps, to all such rules and regulations for the extinction and prevention of fire as may from time to time in like manner be made by the Governor and delivered to the Commissioners.”.

During next year the GFRS hopes to carry out a wide variety of official functions as part of our celebrations. There are plans to hold an Official Dinner at which it is intended to invite all serving and past members of the Service.

A 2015 calendar will be published and hopefully with the help of sponsors given away free. It will be based on the history of the Service and contain photographs through the years.

On a similar vein we have commissioned local historian Richard Garcia MBE to produce a history of the Gibraltar Fire Service, in addition to the historical text the book will feature photographs and plans.

The Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau will be issuing a full set of stamps to commemorate the Anniversary. The issue will contain eight stamps, a presentation pack and a first day cover. The photographs on the stamps and used in the other designs have been taken by serving Firefighters.
Another interesting event is the intended launch of a special die-cast metal scale model car with the GFRS livery. A new flag has been designed and also ties. There will be an Open Day where the public in general will be invited to see the work we carry out and this will entail static displays of vehicles and equipment at Casemates Square.
And finally but in reverse order the Service is planning to support the 2015 Three Kings Cavalcade by constructing a float to participate in the first event of the New Year.
