About Us

On the 16th June 1976 the City Fire Brigade and Fire Services Ordinance, was passed in the Gibraltar House of Assembly (now Gibraltar Parliament). The Ordinance (now Act) provides for the formation of a Fire Brigade for the purpose of fire fighting, prevention of fires, elimination of fire hazards, to carry out rescues and attend to any other calamities which may occur anywhere in Gibraltar.

In addition to this since 2000 the Brigade also mobilise the Emergency Ambulance service for the Gibraltar Health Authority and provide a fully equipped and manned Emergency Ambulance.

The Brigade consists of a single Headquarters station situated outside the City Centre at Grand Parade adjacent to the Cable Car station and the entrance to the Botanic Gardens. Its furthest point of response is seven minutes away.

The Brigade is self-sufficient having its own M/T maintenance section, Breathing Apparatus Training Chambers, Maintenance workshops, and a Mobilising Centre.
Emergency Fire and Ambulance calls are received on telephone number 190 or the GSM mobile telephone service international emergency number 112. The Brigade follows the guidance of the British Fire Service in relation to its structure and training. Promotion within the service is of the Single Tier System, which means that even the Chief Fire Officer starts his career as a firefighter.
New Firefighters undergo 3 months Recruit training at the Fire Service College Moreton-in-Marsh, or at Severn Park Fire & Rescue Training Centre, Bristol, England. Operational Officer development and instructor courses and Fire Safety and Fire Investigation training are also carried out at the Fire Service College.
Training courses in specialist fields such as Ship Fire Fighting, Road Traffic Collision, Cliff and Mountain Rescue, Urban Search and Rescue, HAZMAT etc., are carried out at the Fire Service College and other accredited centres in the U.K., Divers are trained by brigade BSAC instructors and ambulance First Responder training is carried out under the supervision of the Gibraltar Health Authority.
