Fire Safety Department
The Fire Safety Department is responsible for planning, delivering and developing a comprehensive
Community Education strategy adequate for the needs of a modern dynamic society. It's core strategies are aimed
at; the Home, the Workplace, Young Persons and children, and the vulnerable in our community. It
is also focused on specific issues which, can be a danger to the public, such as the use of Fireworks.
Another of the core functions of the Fire Safety Department is the inspection of
premises in connection with the requirements of various Acts
and regulations (as listed below).
Currently and in the last five years a significant amount of time has also been taken up
with the inspection of plans for new buildings, or ones which
are being altered or modified, under the requirements of the Building Regulations.
Post mortems on fires and their investigation, court appearances as expert witnesses,
lectures and presentations to the public and government departments and agencies, complaints regarding fire hazards
and dealing with general enquiries and advice to the public.
The department is comprised of; a Divisional Officer, Station Officer, one Sub Officer and two Leading Firefighters.
All Fire Safety Department staff are trained at the Fire Service College in England where they are trained and qualified as Fire Safety Inspectors and Officers. In addiiton to this several officers have attained HNC's in Fire Safety Studies and Fire Safety Engineering and others are currently embarked on further professional acamdemic studies leading to Under-graduate degrees in the field of Fire Safety. In addition to this they also undertake regular Continous Professional Development (CPD) in the form of training and seminars on subjects such as Smoke Control in Car Parks (BRE), Sprinkler Systems (Residential), Principles of Fire Engineering, Fire Alarm systems etc.,
Fire Safety Officers are required to carry out inspections and the relevant follow-ups under several Acts including the following;
1. FIRE SERVICE ACT, PUBLIC HEALTH ACT and BUILDING RULES2. THE PETROLEUM ACT
3. ENTERTAINMENT ACT
4. EDUCATION ACT
5. EXPLOSIVES ACT
