Social & Sports
Firefighters of the City Fire Brigade are kept busy with social, sports and charity work in our community, taking part in fund raising ventures as part of our Charity Fund organisation and with other local organisations, and participating in such functions as the annual Three Kings Cavalcade. On this page we have noted just some of the Brigade’s social and sporting activities. For all the latest information goto the News Page.

Gold Winners at Firefighter Games
The Brigade competed successfully in two events and took a Gold and Silver Medal at the 8th World Firefighter Games which took place in Sheffield, England from 28 August to 4 September of 2004. The Soccer 6 Aside team won the Gold medal by reaching the finals and beating a French side. In the Swimming Open Water event 35-39 years category Jason Mesilio narrowly missed the first place by less than one second to achieve creditable Silver medal.
Support for New York Firefighters
On Friday the 21 September 2001 members of the Gibraltar City and Defence Fire Services joined in a fund raising venture together with GBC Radio. This was in aid of the families of the New York Fire Department fire-fighters who died tragically in their line of duty during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. The fire-fighters collected money throughout Gibraltar while GBC staged a roadshow. Approximately £15,000 was donated to this venture by the members of the community and visitors to the Rock.
1998 Three King’s Cavalcade
The lastest entry by the Brigade was also relatively successful in the 1998 edition of the Cavalcade with the Pocahanta’s float being awarded the 2nd Prize in the Senior Section.
1995 Visit by H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh
H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh was shown some of the work carried out by the Duke of Edinburgh Association in Gibraltar during his visit. Members of the City Fire Brigade have been associated with this organisation for some years now, in particular providing mountain climbing and abseiling training.
1993 Three King’s Cavalcade
After a number of years away from the Three Kings Cavalcade, the 1993 float under the theme of Fireman Sam was a great success and we obtained the 2nd Prize in the Senior Section.
1990 Cave Sit-in
A rather unique fund-raising event which Brigade members organised was held in Leonora’s Cave, part of the famous St. Michael’s cave system. A group of firefighters from White Watch held a Cave Sit-In. Remaining inside the cave for a week, during which time money was donated by sponsors in aid of the St. John’s Ambulance
1985 Week at Sea Pull
This is a photograph of a pull which was carried out in conjunction with a Week At Sea charity venture. Three members of the Brigade, Sub Officer Clive DelAgua, and now retired D.C.F.O. Alfred Busto and D.O. Tony Almeida, had spent a week at sea living off the fish, when they did catch some, It was a splendid venture and more than £5,000 was raised from the collection during the pull and sponsors of the event.
